HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Pacific Island Beach Boys has returned to its prime concession spot on Kūhiō Beach after an eight-year absence.
The nonprofit was awarded a five-year city lease for board rentals, surfing lessons and canoe rides.
Dave Carvalho, president of the nonprofit that carries the legacy of legendary Waikīkī watermen, said they still ran a concession in Waikīkī, but the return to the prime spot carried weight.
“It was kind of emotional. Really emotional at first, and then it was like surreal,” Carvalho said. “It hasn’t hit me yet, to be honest with you, and it still hasn’t, because we’re still making things better and better.”have grown into a thriving nonprofit, serving hundreds of individuals each year.
In 2018, Dive Oahu took over the lucrative concessions from Star Beachboys and Hawaiian Oceans. Conflicts, complaints and court battles lingered for years. Dive Oahu still maintains a presence down the beach, and Carvalho says he wants to remain positive.
For canoe captain and instructor Johnny Kaleopa’a, the years without the prime concession were difficult.
“Losing it was tough. You lose your sense of pride. Your sense of stability and and your interaction with the people,” Kaleopa’a said. “When it comes back, you want to pay it forward even more. So that’s the whole attitude we have here now.”
Pacific Beach Boys has officially been back for just a week, but move-in day presented challenges. Carvalho described finding derelicts, drug addicts and people on drugs, with boards scattered across the community rack.
“It just was a massive mess, like you wouldn’t believe where you were,” Carvalho said. “But very first day from day one, our goal was to clean it up and we did that in about maybe half a day.”
The Beach Boys say changes happened rapidly after they moved in, with the area now clean, calm and fitting for the beachboy lifestyle.
Eight-year-old Catalina from Alaska took her first surf lesson with the returned Beach Boys. Her mother said she embraced the ocean and was having a blast.
Catalina and her instructor paddled out for an ocean adventure as the Beach Boys ride the wave of a new era in Waikīkī.
